Desert Hell: The British Invasion of Mesopotamia By Charles Townshend
2011 | 591 Pages | ISBN: 0674059999 | PDF | 16 MB
The U.S.-led conquest and occupation of Iraq have kept that troubled country in international headlines since 2003. For America s major Coalition ally, Great Britain, however, this latest incursion into the region played out against the dramatic backdrop of imperial history: Britain s fateful invasion of Mesopotamia in 1914 and the creation of a new nation from the shards of war.The objectives of the expedition sent by the British Government of India were primarily strategic: to protect the Raj, impress Britain s military power upon Arabs chafing under Ottoman rule, and secure the Persian oil supply. But over the course of the Mesopotamian campaign, these goals expanded, and by the end of World War I Britain was committed to controlling the entire region from Suez to India. The conquest of Mesopotamia and the creation of Iraq were the central acts in this boldly opportunistic bid for supremacy. Charles Townshend provides a compelling account of the atrocious, unnecessary suffering inflicted on the expedition s mostly Indian troops, which set the pattern for Britain s follow-up campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan over the next seven years. He chronicles the overconfidence, incompetence, and dangerously vague policy that distorted the mission, and examines the steps by which an initially cautious strategic operation led to imperial expansion on a vast scale."Desert Hell" is a cautionary tale for makers of national policy. And for those with an interest in imperial history, it raises searching questions about Britain s quest for global power and the indelible consequences of those actions for the Middle East and the world.

Demosthenes: On the False Embassy (oration 19) By Douglas Maurice MacDowell; Demosthenes
2000 | 368 Pages | ISBN: 0198153031 | PDF | 16 MB
In 346 BC. the Athenians negotiated a peace treaty with King Philip II of Macedon, but afterwards one of the Athenian ambassadors, Demosthenes, accused another, Aiskhines, of accepting a bribe from Philip to contrive that the terms of the treaty should be favourable to him. The case came totrial three years later, and On the False Embassy is the speech which Demosthenes prepared for the prosecution. It is one of the most famous pieces of ancient oratory, and it is also one of the principal sources of information about the politics of its period. This volume is on the same lines as Professor MacDowell's previous edition of Demosthenes' speech Against Meidias. It includes an introduction concentrating especially on the historical circumstances, a revised Greek text based on fresh study of the manuscripts, an English translation on pagesfacing the text, and the first detailed commentary on the speech for over a hundred years.

Demiurge and Providence: Stoic and Platonist Readings of Plato's Timaeus By Gretchen J. Reydams-Schils
1999 | 297 Pages | ISBN: 2503506569 | PDF | 11 MB
Of the rich legacy of the Timaeus, this study deals with the cross-pollination between Stoic and Platonist readings of Timaeus, spanning the period from Plato's writings to that of the so-called Middle Platonist authors. Plato's Timaeus and Stoic doctrine had their fates intertwined from very early on, both in polemical and reconciliatory contexts. The blend of Platonic and Stoic elements ultimately constituted one of the main conceptual bridges between the pagan tradition on the one hand and the Judeo-Christian, in its own search for the distinction between transcendence and immanence, on the other. Contrary to the received opinion, later platonist authors do not merely borrow Stoic terminology. Rather, in a genuine 'discourse of assimilation' the Stoic analysis of the universe has left a profound mark on Platonist views of the principles, of the place of humans in the universe, as well as of human freedom and its interaction with divine Providence.

Deep Learning in Cancer Diagnostics: A Feature-Based Transfer Learning Evaluation
English | 2023 | ISBN: 9811989362 | 69 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 7 MB
Cancer is the leading cause of mortality in most, if not all, countries around the globe. It is worth noting that the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2019 estimated that cancer is the primary or secondary leading cause of death in 112 of 183 countries for individuals less than 70 years old, which is alarming. In addition, cancer affects socioeconomic development as well. The diagnostics of cancer are often carried out by medical experts through medical imaging; nevertheless, it is not without misdiagnosis owing to a myriad of reasons. With the advancement of technology and computing power, the use of state-of-the-art computational methods for the accurate diagnosis of cancer is no longer far-fetched. In this brief, the diagnosis of four types of common cancers, i.e., breast, lung, oral and skin, are evaluated with different state-of-the-art feature-based transfer learning models. It is expected that the findings in this book are insightful to various stakeholders in the diagnosis of cancer.

Counting, Sampling and Integrating: Algorithms and Complexity by Mark Jerrum
English | PDF | 2003 | 120 Pages | ISBN : 3764369469 | 12.1 MB
These notes had their origin in a postgraduate lecture series I gave at the Eid genossiche Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich in the Spring of 2000. I am very grateful to my hosts, the Forschungsinstitut fUr Mathematik at ETH, for providing the ideal opportunity to develop and present this material in what I hope is a reasonably coherent manner, and also for encouraging and assisting me to record the proceedings in these lecture notes. The subject of the lecture series was counting (of combinatorial structures) and related topics, viewed from a computational perspective. As we shall see, "related topics" include sampling combinatorial structures (being computationally equivalent to approximate counting via efficient reductions), evaluating partition functions (being weighted counting) and calculating the volume of bodies (being counting in the limit). We shall be inhabiting a different world to the one conjured up by books with titles like Combinatorial Enumeration or Graphical Enumeration. There, the prob lems are usually parameterised on a single integer parameter n, and the required solutions are closed form or asymptotic estimates obtained using very refined and precise analytical tools.

Controlling Small Arms: Consolidation, innovation and relevance in research and policy By Peter Batchelor (editor), Kai Michael Kenkel (editor)
2013 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 0415856493 | PDF | 3 MB
This edited volume takes stock of the state of research and policy on the issue of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), ten years after the UN first agreed to deal with the problem. The end of the Cold War originated a series of phenomena that would subsequently come to dominate the political agenda. Perhaps most symptomatic of the ensuing environment is the marked escalation in the scale and dynamics of armed violence, driven by the proliferation of SALW. Events in Rwanda, Somalia and Bosnia seared into global consciousness the devastating effects of this phenomenon, and of the necessity to engage actively in its limitation and prevention. This edited volume explores and outlines the research and policy on the SALW issue at this critical juncture. In addition to providing a detailed telling of the genesis and evolution of SALW research and advocacy, the volume features a series of essays from leading scholars in the field on both advances in research and action on SALW. It reflects on what has been achieved in terms of cumulative advances in data, methodology and analysis, and looks at the ways in which these developments have helped to inform policy making at national, regional and international levels. Alongside situating and integrating past and present advances in advocacy and international action, Controlling Small Arms also outlines future directions for research and action. This book will be of much interest to students of small arms, peace and conflict studies, peacebuilding, security studies and IR.
