Air Command and General Staff College, "An Evaluation of the Aerial Interdiction Campaign Known as the "Transportation Plan" For the D-Day Invasion "
English | ISBN: 1500162981 | 2014 | 48 pages | EPUB | 503 KB
The various airmen leading the air war had great differences of opinion regarding what to target in the European theater of operations in support of Operation Overlord. The central leadership figures were Lt. General Carl Spaatz, USSTAF commander, and Air Chief Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory, AEAF commander. Each of these military men obviously wanted to support the planned Allied invasion, but they held differing opinions in regard to how to best support the invasion troops. They were greatly influenced by both personal experience and the advice of their respective scientific advisors, Walt W. Rostow and Dr. Solly Zuckerman. Also, Air Marshal Tedder, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander, and Air Marshal Harris, Commander of the RAF Bomber Command, contributed to the decisions to carry out the transportation interdiction campaign. This research focuses on the period January 1944 through the end of June 1944. It includes a literature review of published memoirs and historic accounts of the individuals involved in the decision to implement the transportation plan. The archives of the Air Force Historical Research Agency were accessed to obtain actual accounts and directives implementing the pre-D-Day interdiction campaign. Numerous facts support a discussion of each of the airmen's interests and the controversy that surrounded the transportationcampaign. The implementation of the transportation interdiction campaign resulted in thesuccessful denial of German reinforcements to the Normandy beachhead. This success was a result of five significant factors. These were as follows: 1) the vast numbers of Allied aircraft relative to the Germans helped achieve and maintain air superiority; 2) the increased variety of targets which were attacked in implementation of the transportation plan; 3) the oil campaign with its impact on German aircraft availability and quality of German combat pilots; 4) the German's indecision to commit their reserves based on the belief that the real invasion had not yet occurred; and 5) the impact of the scientific advisors on the military leadership's decisions. These factors were crucial in contributing to the success of the transportation plan in support of the D-Day invasion.

American Graffiti: George Lucas, the New Hollywood and the Baby Boom Generation
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1138681911 | 131 Pages | PDF (True) | 4.2 MB
Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, Peter Kramer explains how American Graffiti came into existence, paying close attention to the small-town upbringing and previous films of its director George Lucas. The book also explores the film's story, style and themes; its marketing, critical reception, commercial success and cultural impact in the United States; and relates all of this both to the transformation of American cinema in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and to the impact of the postwar baby-boom on American culture and society.

Kevin Phillips, "American Dynasty: Aristocracy, Fortune and the Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush"
English | 2004 | ISBN: 0670032646, 071399746X, 0143034316 | 405 pages | EPUB | 2.6 MB
An acerbic, withering account of the ascent of the Bush family to the pinnacle of the American political and social elite and the implications of the dynasty's hold on power for democracy in America. With an unerring instinct for fakery and humbug,Phillips traces the convoluted trail of Bush mendacity through three generations. The picture he paints of a family willing to do ANYTHING to hold power and a country so craven as to vote for it is both very funny and completely dismaying in equal measure.

American Aesthetics: Theory and Practice By Walter B. Gulick (editor), Gary Slater (editor)
2020 | 428 Pages | ISBN: 1438478577 | PDF | 3 MB
Proposes a distinctly American approach to aesthetic judgment and practice.Although there are distinctly American artists―Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, Grandma Moses, Thomas Hart Benton, and Andy Warhol, for example―very little attention has been devoted to formulating any distinctively American characteristics of aesthetic judgment and practice. This volume takes a step in this direction, presenting an introductory essay on the possibility of such a distinctly American tradition, and a collection of essays exploring particular examples from a variety of angles. Some of the essays in this collection extend pragmatist and process insights about the important place aesthetics has in molding and assessing experience. Other essays examine the place of American aesthetics in relation to such particular forms of art as painting, literature, music, and film. Three essays attend to the aesthetic aspects of a flourishing life. In each of the essays, American aesthetics is understood to arise out of deeply felt personal, historical, and cultural backgrounds. Consequently, not only are such relatively abstract notions as harmony, fit, elegance, proportion, and the like involved in aesthetic judgment, but also religious, political, and social factors become embroiled in aesthetic discernment. Thus the ongoing pattern of American aesthetics is shown to be distinguishable from such other varieties of aesthetic thought as analytic aesthetics, New Criticism, and postmodern approaches to aesthetics.
