Mona Rocha, "The Weatherwomen: Militant Feminists of the Weather Underground"
English | ISBN: 1476676658 | 2020 | 235 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Assertive, tough, and idealistic, the Weatherwomen-members of the Weather Underground Organization (WUO) from the late 1960s-were determined to stamp out sexism and social injustice. They asserted that militancy was necessary in the pursuit of a socialist revolution that would produce gender, racial, and class equality. This book excavates their long buried history and reclaims the voices of the Weatherwomen. The Weatherwomen's militant feminism had many facets. It criticized the role of women in the home, was concerned with the subordination of women to men, attacked the gender pay gap, and supported female bodily integrity. The Weatherwomen also refined their own feminist ideology into an intersectional one that would incorporate multiple identity perspectives beyond the white, American, middle-class perspective. In shaping a feminist vision for the WUO, the Weatherwomen dealt with sexism within their own organization and were dismissed by some feminist groups of the time as inauthentic. This work strives to recognize the WUO's militant feminist efforts, and the agency, autonomy, and empowerment of its female members, by concentrating on their actions and writings.

The Violence of the Biblical God By L. Daniel Hawk
2019 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0802872441 | EPUB | 1 MB
On how we can make sense of violence in the Bible The teachings of the incarnate Jesus sometimes seem to be at odds with the edicts of the God of Israel. Joshua commands God's people to wipe out everyone in the Promised Land, yet Jesus com-mands God's people to love their enemies. How are we to interpret passages on violence when it is sanctioned at one point and condemned at another? The Violence of the Biblical Godby L. Daniel Hawk offers a new frame-work, solidly rooted in the authority of Scripture, for understand-ing the paradox of God's participation in violence. Hawk suggests that the historical narrative of the Bible offers multiple canonical pictures for faithful Christian engagement with the violent systems of the world. Reading Scripture as the story of the Crea-tor's decision to restore creation by workingwithinandalong withhumanity, Hawk shows how Christians with diverse perspectives can at once be faithful to the biblical text and partake in a common conversation on violence.

The Vices of Integrity: E.H. Carr 1892-1982 By Jonathan Haslam
1999 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 1859847331 | PDF | 71 MB
Edward Hallet Carr is renowned as the historian of Soviet Russia, biographer of The Romantic Exiles, founder of the 'realist' approach to the study of International Relations and author of the classic Trevelyan lecture series, What is History? This sparkling biography reveals how intimately the historian's grasp of statecraft is related to Carr's own formative experiences at the center of political events. Seconded from Cambridge to the Foreign Office during World War I to administer the Allied blockade of the new Soviet Republic and attending the post-war Paris peace talks on behalf of the British, Carr witnessed at first hand the unfolding drama of the revolution which was to become the centerpiece of his life's work. At the Foreign Office, and as Times leader writer during World War II, he was an influential opinion maker whose open-minded attitude to the Soviet Union deprived him of academic posts for the next decade. Jonathan Haslam paints a compelling psychological portrait of a man torn between a vicarious identification with the romance of revolution and the ruthless realism of his own intellectual formation. In his fascinating account of the creation of Carr's vast 14 volume History of Soviet Russia, Haslam reveals a major historian at his craft.

Jeff Biggers, "The United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture, and Enlightenment to America"
English | 2005 | pages: 260 | ISBN: 1593760310, 1593761511 | PDF | 1,1 mb
The word Appalachia is seldom uttered in the same sentence with the word enlightenment. More likely, images of the film Deliverance, corncob chomping grannies, or bonafide gun-toting hillbillies come to mind. However, in truth, Appalachia has been a cradle of US freedom, independence, and enlightenment, as well as a region of progressive social history, literature, and music.
