Free Download Informed Choice of Medical Services By Marj Milburn
2001 | 129 Pages | ISBN: 0754611981 | PDF | 3 MB
This text argues the case for external regulation of the medical community in order to protect the rights and safety of people receiving medical treatment. The author believes that medical authoritarianism, and its failure to recognise the right to informed choice, is a result of the traditional western philosophical, political, legal and scientific focus on rationality as the major influence on human behaviour. While the discussion focuses on the exploitation of women by patriarchal medicine, this is not intended to discount the experiences of other groups whose right to self-determination is ignored by the medical community. The work proposes that the law in liberal democratic societies should protect these vulnerable citizens from rights violations. Only then will informed and voluntary choice of medical services be possible.

Free Download Hannah Lambie-Mumford, "Hungry Britain: The Rise of Food Charity"
English | ISBN: 1447328280 | 2017 | 192 pages | EPUB | 470 KB
Drawing on empirical research with the UK's two largest charitable food organisations, this book explores the prolific rise of food charity over the last 15 years and its implications for overcoming food insecurity. As the welfare state withdraws, leaving food banks to protect the most vulnerable, the author questions the sustainability of this system and asks where responsibility lies - in practice and in theory - for ensuring everyone can realise their human right to food. The book argues that effective, policy-driven solutions require a clear rights-based framework, which enables a range of actors including the state, charities and the food industry to work together towards, and be held accountable for, the progressive realisation of the right to food for all in the UK.

Free Download Dorothy Noyes, "Humble Theory: Folklore's Grasp on Social Life"
English | ISBN: 0253022916 | 2016 | 470 pages | EPUB | 810 KB
Celebrated folklorist, Dorothy Noyes, offers an unforgettable glimpse of her craft and the many ways it matters. Folklore is the dirty linen of modernity, carrying the traces of working bodies and the worlds they live in. It is necessary but embarrassing, not easily blanched and made respectable for public view, although sometimes this display is deemed useful. The place of folklore studies among modern academic disciplines has accordingly been marginal and precarious, yet folklore studies are foundational and persistent. Long engaged with all that escapes the gaze of grand theory and grand narratives, folklorists have followed the lead of the people whose practices they study. They attend to local economies of meaning; they examine the challenge of making room for maneuver within circumstances one does not control. Incisive and wide ranging, the fifteen essays in this book chronicle the "humble theory" of both folk and folklorist as interacting perspectives on social life in the modern Western world.
