Free Download Gandhi: Struggling for Autonomy By Ronald J. Terchek
1998 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 0847692140 | PDF | 2 MB
Using the principle of individual autonomy-rather than civil disobedience, Indian independence, or duty-as an analytical lens, Ronald J. Terchek offers a completely original interpretation of his subject's political thought. Terchek argues that Gandhi's thought is animated by a concern for the equal respect and regard for all persons, and he describes how Gandhi's writings illuminate several critical discourses in political theory, debates that overlap with many Western writers to whom Gandhi is seldom compared.

Free Download From Self to Self - Notes and Quotes in Response to Awakening to the Dream By Leo Hartong
2005 | 262 Pages | ISBN: 0954779274 | PDF | 6 MB
A compilation of expressions, questions and answers that came about in response to Leo's highly praised first book 'Awakening to the Dream'. Leo writes with characteristic insight and uses metaphor to illuminate the paradoxical and apparently confusing nature of non-dual reality. His original writing is reinforced by a vast knowledge of non-duality in other spiritual traditions and he weaves these together with his own direct path to present clear pointers to contemporary seekers An appropriately chosen quotation taken from various sources appears at the end of each short chapter. Also included at the end of the book is the full text of the Hsin-hsin Ming by the third Chan patriarch Seng-ts'an "The words in this book repeatedly point to the essence which knows the reading as it takes place. Rather than an encouragement to follow a lengthy path, it is an invitation to step off the path. It does not point to 'your' awareness, but to Awareness itself in which the idea of 'you' appears. It does not point to 'your' beingness, but to the undeniable Beingness that appears as you."

Free Download From Persons to People: Further Studies in the Politics of Population By William Petersen
2003 | 250 Pages | ISBN: 0765801701 | PDF | 25 MB
Problems associated with aggregation and classification are the underlying theme of this book. When data assembled from individuals are presented as group characteristics, this process has logical complications. Racial profiling and ethnic discrimination are obvious examples of the problem. Petersen's book analyzes in general how information from "persons" turns into statistics about specific "people." The book is divided into two parts covering population and ethnicity. The first two chapters in part 1, on population statistics and the age-sex structure, are the foundations for any demographic analysis. Chapter 3 is a brief review of the interminable debate over whether the subsistence of mankind is on the point of depletion. The three following chapters are on population theory as expounded by Malthus, Marx, and Communists. Chapters 7 and 8 discuss the competition between parents and the state concerning which of the two shall decide on procreation. Chapter 9 is an account of population at the frontier, using Nevada as a prototype. The last chapter in part 1 is a proposal, to moderate the endless debate about abortion. The first two chapters in the second part of the book concern methods for analyzing ethnicity that are essential for a full understanding of demography: how and by whom ethnic groups are defined. The next chapter discusses some of the many subdivisions of European nations, countering the analyses of European unity with the fact that most of its regions are not themselves homogeneous. In a number of instances American statistical agencies have used surnames to identify nationalities, with invalid results, as the author shows in the next chapter. "Jews as a Race" is an attempt to counter Nazi dogma with a rational analysis of a contentious topic. The subsequent chapters compare Japanese and Chinese Americans as small but fascinating minorities and analyze the social consequences of religion from theoretical and factual viewpoints. The last chapter summarizes the conclusions to be drawn from these topics. Demographers, sociologists, and statisticians, as well as those generally concerned with social policy, will find From Persons to People useful and courageous-the hallmark of the dean of sociological demography. .

Free Download Films with Legs: Crossing Borders with Foreign Language Films By Rosemary A. Peters; Veronique Maisier
2011 | 255 Pages | ISBN: 1443832049 | PDF | 2 MB
Films With Legs: Crossing Borders with Foreign Language Films addresses the ways international cinematic traditions both erect borders and blur them or tear them down. Each chapter of this book examines real and perceived borders, their representations on the screen and their manifestations in filmic texts that can also be cultural documents and political statements. The fifteen articles included here discuss films made by twenty-four directors, with dialogues in nine foreign languages, representing cultural aspects from twelve countries and five continents. From Algeria to Bulgaria, Germany to Israel, India to Argentina, the films studied in this book have legs that cross many borders and take their audiences on distant journeys. Simultaneously, these films comment on the ever-expanding nature of cinema itself, of filmic language and of film as language, and discuss how borders are constructed on the screen, not just in fences and walls and boundaries, but also in dialogue and dialect, speech and accent and silence.
