Compact of the Republic The League of States and the Constitution
Free Download Compact of the Republic: The League of States and the Constitution By David Benner
2014 | 388 Pages | ISBN: 0692484264 | EPUB | 1 MB
The United States Constitution was a concerted response to an age of tyrannical kings and highly centralized government. As history reveals, such political authority had to be challenged directly - by local units and causes - to preserve liberty and ensure public happiness.Compact of the Republic demonstrates that the Constitution did not impose a nationalist, superlative central government, and was not ratified by "one American people" in the aggregate. Instead, the document was the product of a multi-party arrangement, where the states remained the masters of their own creation and the pillars of the federal system. In Compact of the Republic, historian David Benner:*Reveals that representatives were assured that delegated power could be reclaimed by the states following acts of federal overreach and usurpation*Explains the historical foundation behind the Bill of Rights, and traces the limitations on government to the actions of malevolent kings*Proves the Constitution acknowledges the states in the plural, as a collection of sovereign societies with varied interests*Demonstrates that the "elastic clauses" were clearly explained during the ratification campaign, and leave no room for modern reinterpretation*Describes how the federal judiciary now overturns state laws it has no jurisdiction over, to the contrary of its original scope of power*Explains why Thomas Jefferson and James Madison believed that unconstitutional federal laws had to be opposed, nullified, and obstructed by the states*Illustrates that ratification was secured only by convincing opponents of the Constitution that the document would produce a nominal general government with limited, enumerated powers

Community and Solitude New Essays on Johnson's Circle
Free Download Community and Solitude: New Essays on Johnson's Circle By Anthony W. Lee et al
2019 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 168448023X | PDF | 14 MB
Samuel Johnson's life was situated within a rich social and intellectual community of friendships―and antagonisms. Community and Solitude is a collection of ten essays that explores relationships between Johnson and several of his main contemporaries―including James Boswell, Edmund Burke, Frances Burney, Robert Chambers, Oliver Goldsmith, Bennet Langton, Arthur Murphy, Richard Savage, Anna Seward, and Thomas Warton―and analyzes some of the literary productions emanating from the pressures within those relationships. In their detailed and careful examination of particular works situated within complex social and personal contexts, the essays in this volume offer a "thick" and illuminating description of Johnson's world that also engages with larger cultural and aesthetic issues, such as intertextuality, literary celebrity, narrative, the nature of criticism, race, slavery, and sensibility.

Civil Rights and Beyond African American and Latinoa Activism in the Twentieth-century United States
Free Download Civil Rights and Beyond: African American and Latino/a Activism in the Twentieth-century United States By Brian D. Behnken
2016 | 270 Pages | ISBN: 082034916X | PDF | 2 MB
Civil Rights and Beyond examines the dynamic relationships between African American and Latino/a activists in the United States from the 1930s to the present day. Building on recent scholarship that explores black-Latino/a relations in the United States, this book pushes the timeframe for the study of interactions between blacks and a variety of Latino/a groups beyond the standard chronology of the civil rights era. As such, the book merges a host of community histories--each with their own distinct historical experiences and activisms--to explore group dynamics, differing strategies and activist moments, and the broader quests of these communities for rights and social justice. This book is framed around the concept of "activism," which most fully encompasses the relationships that blacks and Latinos have enjoyed throughout the twentieth century. Wide ranging and pioneering, Civil Rights and Beyond explores black and Latino/a activism from California to Florida, Chicago to Bakersfield--and a host of other communities and cities--to demonstrate the complicated nature of African American-Latino/a activism in the twentieth-century United States.

Beyond Memory Italian Protestants in Italy and America
Free Download Beyond Memory: Italian Protestants in Italy and America By Dennis Barone
2016 | 194 Pages | ISBN: 1438462158 | PDF | 3 MB
In Beyond Memory, Dennis Barone uncovers the richness and diversity of the Italian Protestant experience and places it in the context of migration and political and social life in both Italy and the United States. Italian Protestants have received scant attention in the fields of Italian American studies, religious studies, and immigration studies, and through literary sources, church records, manuscript sources, and secondary sources in various fields, Barone introduces such forgotten voices as the Baptist Antonio Mangano, the Methodist Antonio Arrighi, and his great-grandfather Alfredo Barone, a Baptist minister to congregations in Italy and Massachusetts. Examining the complex histories of these and other Italian Protestants, Barone argues that Protestantism ultimately served as a means to negotiate between Old World and New World ways, even as it resulted in the double alienation of rejection by Roman Catholic immigrants and condescension by Anglo-Protestants. Though the book focuses on the years of high immigration (1890-1920), it also looks at precursors to post-reunification Protestants as well as Protestants in Italy today, now that the nation has become a country of in-migration.
