SQL stands for Structured Query Language. Essentially, it's a language that allows communication with databases in order to manage all the data they contain. SQL is a little different to other programming languages you may have encountered. SQL is a declarative language; when you write an SQL statement you describe what needs to be done, but not exactly how to do it the exact details of how the query is executed are handled internally by the RDBMS you are using.
It offers looping, logic directives, variables, and so on. However, it's not a language in the same sense as, say, Java or C++. SQL is considered a fourth-generation language (4GL), whereas Java and C++ are third-generation languages (3GLs). Instead of being a programming language for building websites, apps, or software, SQL is a language that enables storing, retrieving, and manipulating data in databases.
