What you'll learn:
Understand technical and operational details of RS-485 networks
Analyze and perform basic RS-485 network installations
Apply RS-485 networks in practice with low-cost hardware (Arduino, TTL/RS-485 module and USB/RS-485 converter)
Apply programming concepts for data communication and master-slave protocols
Learn programming concepts and the use of Arduino IDE Serial library functions
Identify and troubleshoot typical problems in RS-485 networks
Requirements:
A basic understanding of electronics, DC electrical circuits and microcontrollers
A basic understanding about using and programming Arduino platform devices
A computer with Windows 10 or higher (it can be done with other Operating Systems, with specific software)
Hardware needed for practices: Arduino Uno, TTL/RS485 Module, USB/RS-485 Converter, 120 and 470 Ω resistors, protoboard, jumpers and wires
Description:
The "RS-485 Networks (EIA-485)" course provides a comprehensive understanding of RS-485 network technology, which is widely used in industrial automation applications. This course is intended for individuals interested in understanding the fundamental principles behind this network technology, from its overview to practical application.Students will have the opportunity to explore the essential technical concepts behind RS-485 networks, including details about their electronics and components, commonly used communication protocols (master-slave), and network operation. In addition, best practices for the physical installation of these networks will be taught, along with the components necessary to configure and maintain an efficient RS-485 network.Students will also learn how to identify and troubleshoot common problems that may arise in RS-485 networks, based on knowledge of the electrical concepts of the standard and the use of tools such as a multimeter, oscilloscope, and protocol analyzers. The practical part of the course focuses on applying the knowledge acquired, using accessible components such as Arduino boards, modules and converters, to create and implement RS-485 networks. The student will therefore have the opportunity to work on real projects, which will help to solidify theoretical understanding through practice.Throughout the course, there will be tests with exercises to reinforce concepts and also programming exercises. The classes are divided into the following sections and topics:IntroductionOverview and applicationsConcepts of RS-485 NetworksElectrical SignalsInstallationTermination Resistors and Fail-Safe BiasTransceiversConverters and RepeatersGroundingTroubleshootingTroubleshooting Common ProblemsTest EquipmentReference MaterialsReference MaterialsPractice with RS-485 Networks and ArduinoMaterials and programsPractice 01 - Communication between PC and Arduino using RS-485 Practice 02 - Master-Slave Communication between several Arduinos using RS-485
