Rethinking Investment Incentives Trends and Policy Options
, "Rethinking Investment Incentives: Trends and Policy Options"
English | ISBN: 0231172982 | 2016 | 368 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Governments often use direct subsidies or tax credits to encourage investment and promote economic growth and other development objectives. Properly designed and implemented, these incentives can advance a wide range of policy objectives (increasing employment, promoting sustainability, and reducing inequality). Yet since design and implementation are complicated, incentives have been associated with rent-seeking and wasteful public spending.

Regional Human Rights Systems Volume V
Regional Human Rights Systems: Volume V By Christina M. Cerna (editor)
2014 | 592 Pages | ISBN: 1409439119 | PDF | 52 MB
Over the past sixty years the regional human rights systems have surpassed the UN human rights bodies in affording protection to the victims of human rights violations. Most of these systems have courts that are empowered to issue legally binding judgments and reparations for violations of human rights, which states have been unwilling to accord the UN system. The essays selected for this volume examine the structure and functioning of the principal regional human rights systems in the world today: 1) the Inter-American Commission and Court of Human Rights, 2) the European Court of Human Rights, 3) the African Commission and Court of Human and Peoples' Rights and 4) the ASEAN Intergovernmental Human Rights Commission. These systems guarantee primarily civil and political rights. Central to all four systems is the necessity of a democratic form of government to guarantee these rights, although not all governments, parties to these regional treaties, are democracies. These articles trace the history of these systems, in particular, the expansion of their membership to include almost all independent countries in the region, and their evolution towards recognition of a 'right to democracy'.

Refining Relativity (The Special Theory)
Refining Relativity (The Special Theory) by Karunesh M. Tripathi
English | 2021 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B09B6B8CXT | 135 pages | EPUB | 4.54 Mb
Special Relativity relations, though derived for a light signal, are used on physical objects, that too with conditions, to declare phenomena of length contraction and time dilation in motion. Ad hoc selection of frame - stationary sometimes and moving at other times - for imposing conditions further worsens the confusion. The same relations produce just the opposite results when applied without, or with change in, conditions.

Redress for Historical Injustices in the United States On Reparations for Slavery, Jim Crow, and Their Legacies
Michael T. Martin, Marilyn Yaquinto, "Redress for Historical Injustices in the United States: On Reparations for Slavery, Jim Crow, and Their Legacies"
English | 2007 | ISBN: 0822340240, 0822340054 | PDF | pages: 754 | 7.8 mb
An exceptional resource, this comprehensive reader brings together primary and secondary documents related to efforts to redress historical wrongs against African Americans. These varied efforts are often grouped together under the rubric "reparations movement," and they are united in their goal of "repairing" the injustices that have followed from the long history of slavery and Jim Crow. Yet, as this collection reveals, there is a broad range of opinions as to the form that repair might take. Some advocates of redress call for apologies; others for official acknowledgment of wrongdoing; and still others for more tangible reparations: monetary compensation, government investment in disenfranchised communities, the restitution of lost property and rights, and repatriation.

Red Power Rising The National Indian Youth Council and the Origins of Native Activism
Red Power Rising: The National Indian Youth Council and the Origins of Native Activism By Bradley G. Shreve
2011 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 0806141786 | PDF | 14 MB
During the 1960s, American Indian youth were swept up in a movement called Red Power-a civil rights struggle fueled by intertribal activism. While some define the movement as militant and others see it as peaceful, there is one common assumption about its history: Red Power began with the Indian takeover of Alcatraz in 1969. Or did it?In this groundbreaking book, Bradley G. Shreve sets the record straight by tracing the origins of Red Power further back in time: to the student activism of the National Indian Youth Council (NIYC), founded in Gallup, New Mexico, in 1961. Unlike other 1960s and '70s activist groups that challenged the fundamental beliefs of their predecessors, the students who established the NIYC were determined to uphold the cultures and ideals of their elders, building on a tradition of pan-Indian organization dating back to the early twentieth century. Their cornerstone principles of tribal sovereignty, self determination, treaty rights, and cultural preservation helped ensure their survival, for in contrast to other activist groups that came and went, the NIYC is still in operation today. But Shreve also shows that the NIYC was very much a product of 1960s idealistic ferment and its leaders learned tactics from other contemporary leftist movements.By uncovering the origins of Red Power, Shreve writes an important new chapter in the history of American Indian activism. And by revealing the ideology and accomplishments of the NIYC, he ties the Red Power Movement to the larger struggle for human rights that continues to this day both in the United States and across the globe.

Reading Plato through Jung Why must the Third become the Fourth
Reading Plato through Jung: Why must the Third become the Fourth?
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031168119 | 234 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
This book examines the Jungian imperative that the Third must become the Fourth through the lens of Carl Jung's complex reception of Plato. While in psychoanalytic discourse the Third is typically viewed as an agent that brings about healing, the author highlights that, in the case of Jung, an early emphasis on the Third as the "transcendent function" gave way to an increasing insistence on the importance of the Fourth. And yet, he asks, why must "the Third become the Fourth"?

Re-conceiving Property Rights in the New Millennium Towards a New Sustainable Land Relations Policy
Re-conceiving Property Rights in the New Millennium: Towards a New Sustainable Land Relations Policy By Ben Chigara (editor)
2011 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 0415678706 | PDF | 3 MB
This book constitutes volume two of a two volume examination of development community land issues in Southern Africa. Following from volume one Southern African Development Community Land Issues, this book considers the possibility of a new, sustainable land relations policy for Southern African Development Community States (SADC) that are currently mired up in land disputes that have become subject of domestic, regional and international tribunals. Chigara demonstrates that land relations in the SADC have always been, and will perhaps remain, a matter for constitutional regulation. Because constitutional laws are distinctive from other laws only by constitutional design, legal contests appear to be the least likely means for settlement in the sub-region. Only human rights inspired policies, that respond to the call for social justice by acknowledging both the current and the underlying contexts to the disputes, hold the most potential to resolve these disputes. The book recommends efficient pedagogical counter-apartheid-rule psychological distortions regarding the significance of human dignity (PECAPDISH) as a pre-requisite and corollary to the dismantling of the salient physical legacy of apartheid-rule in affected SADC States. The book shows that PECAPDISH's potential and benefits would be enormous. The book will be of interest to students and researchers of Property and Conveyancing Law, Human Rights Law, and Land Law.
